University of Alberta Botanic Garden
Canada, Canada
The University of Alberta Botanic Garden, formerly known as the Devonian Botanic Garden, is Alberta's largest botanical garden and was established in 1959 by the University of Alberta when Colonel H.A. (Sandy) Doyle donated land for its creation.
Located approximately 15 minutes southwest of Edmonton in Parkland County, just north of the town of Devon, the garden spans 240 acres (97 hectares) and includes 80 acres of cultivated gardens plus extensive natural areas featuring wetlands, fens, woods, and meadows.
The garden houses over 8,000 actively managed plants and features specialized display areas including the Aga Khan Garden (the northernmost Islamic-inspired garden in the world), the 5-acre Kurimoto Japanese Garden, an Alpine Garden, herb and sensory gardens, indoor showhouses with a tropical plant and butterfly house, and collections of peonies, lilacs, lilies, and hardy roses.
Open to the public from May to September, it offers award-winning visitor attractions with guided tram tours, walking tours, educational courses for children and families, an outdoor café, and a gift shop, serving as both a recreational destination and a research unit within the University's Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences.
