Van Vleck House & Gardens in Montclair, New Jersey, originated as a private 12-acre estate more than 140 years ago when Joseph Van Vleck Sr. and his family moved to the area seeking refuge from city life.

The property was developed over three generations of the Van Vleck family, who were architects and horticulturists, focusing on cultivating a garden rich in ericaceous plants, notably rhododendrons and azaleas, some of which were hybridized by family members. The main house, built in 1916 in a Mediterranean villa style by Joseph Van Vleck Jr., now serves as a center for nonprofit groups and community events.

The gardens, open daily from dawn to dusk, feature formal spaces, woodlands, and specialized areas like a butterfly garden and an edible garden, providing a peaceful natural oasis in the heart of Montclair. The site is managed by The Montclair Foundation and hosts a range of cultural and educational programs while offering visitors a serene environment to explore diverse plant collections and enjoy seasonal blooms.​
