Veltheimsburg
Hohe Börde, Germany, Germany
Veltheimsburg, formerly Burg Alvensleben, in Bebertal-Alvensleben within Hohe Börde, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, began as a medieval bishop's fortress first mentioned in 1180 under Halberstadt bishops, likely older, with a nearby Markgrafenburg added before 1245 by Brandenburg margraves as part of a double-moated ringwall defense featuring a massive 13th-century Romanesque keep over 30 meters tall.
Passing to Magdeburg archbishops in the 14th century, held by the Alvensleben family from 1534-1598 who restored its ruins, and then as an episcopal fief to the von Veltheim family from 1439 until 1945 expropriation, it saw 18th-century expansions with a manor house and late 19th-early 20th-century Neo-Gothic rebuilding into its current romanticized form.
Today, amid remnants of medieval walls, it hosts municipal offices, a local history room, and hospitality in its historic setting.
