Verified Vilbel Castle

Bad Vilbel, Germany, Germany

Vilbel Castle in Bad Vilbel, Germany, is a moated castle dating back to the 12th or 13th century, originally built along the Nidda River.

It was the residence of the Knights of Vilbel and served as the official seat of the Mainz administration from 1581 until 1796. The castle experienced destruction during a siege by French revolutionary forces in 1796 and has since remained in partial ruins, with key surviving features including the shield wall, ring wall, a defense tower, the castle courtyard, and the gate.

Its moat, which historically was often dry, was kept filled with water starting in the 1950s but was drained later due to damage caused by dampness to the sandstone walls, necessitating restoration efforts. Since 1987, the castle ruins have been used as the venue for the annual Burgfestspiele, an open-air theatre festival drawing thousands of visitors.

The grounds, now accompanied by a nearby cultural center called the Old Mill, continue to be a cultural hub in Bad Vilbel, blending historical significance with modern arts and community events.
