Virneburg Castle is a high medieval hilltop ruin crowning a slate dome at 430 meters near the village of Virneburg in Germany's Eifel region, Rhineland-Palatinate, first documented in 1192 as the seat of the Lords of Virneburg who rose to county status under Trier's archbishops.
Built in the late 12th century as a count palatine fief with an elliptical layout featuring a massive bergfried tower (replaced in 1671), shield wall, gatehouse, and outer bailey with round tower, it endured feuds, debt pledges to Trier's Baldwin in 1339, and French destruction in 1689 during the Nine Years' War.
Passed through heirs like Löwenstein-Wertheim before decay, its remnants now form a hiking destination showcasing Eifel fortifications amid the Nitzbach Valley.
