Visconteo Castle
Abbiategrasso, Italy, Italy
Visconteo Castle in Abbiategrasso is a medieval castle located in the town of Abbiategrasso, southwest of Milan.
Built between the late 13th and 14th centuries on the site of an earlier fortification, it was expanded by the powerful Visconti family and became one of their most important residences. During the 14th and 15th centuries, the castle served as a favored home for the duchesses of Milan from both the Visconti and Sforza dynasties.
Easily reached from Milan via the Naviglio Grande canal, it evolved from a defensive fortress into an elegant country residence decorated with frescoes and architectural details. Although parts of the original structure were demolished over time, the surviving sections have been carefully restored. Today, the castle is owned by the municipality of Abbiategrasso and serves cultural and civic functions, remaining one of the town’s most significant historical landmarks and a symbol of its rich medieval heritage.
