It was built in the second half of the 14th century by Bernabò Visconti, ruler of Milan, primarily as a hunting lodge and country residence within a vast ducal game reserve. The castle became a favored retreat of the Visconti family and was later enhanced by Filippo Maria Visconti and Ludovico Sforza.

Renaissance additions, including elegant halls, a loggia, and improvements to the central tower, transformed it from a simple rural residence into a prestigious noble villa that hosted important guests, including Emperor Maximilian I. Built mainly of brick and distinguished by its prominent central tower, the castle remains one of the most significant Visconti-era landmarks in the Milan area.
