Vitozza
Italy, Italy
Vitozza is a remarkable medieval cave settlement near Sorano in southern Tuscany and is considered one of the largest and most important rock-cut settlements in central Italy.
Built around an 11th-century castle established by the Aldobrandeschi family, the site was inhabited for centuries, with evidence suggesting earlier occupation dating back to Etruscan and Roman times. What makes Vitozza unique is its network of more than 200 caves carved into the local tuff rock.
These caves served as homes, stables, storage areas, and workshops, and many still preserve features such as cisterns, niches, chimneys, and feeding troughs that reveal how people lived there. Today, Vitozza is an important archaeological and historical site surrounded by forests and scenic walking trails. Visitors can explore the ruins of fortifications, churches, and cave dwellings while experiencing a fascinating blend of medieval history, archaeology, and natural beauty.
