Verified Vorotnaberd Fortress

Armenia, Armenia

Vorotnaberd Fortress, also known as Davit Bek’s Castle, is a large medieval fortress perched on a ridge along the right bank of the Vorotan River in the Syunik Province of Armenia, between the villages of Vaghatin and Vorotan (sometimes associated with nearby Vorotanavan) and at about 1,365 meters above sea level.

First mentioned in historical sources from the 5th century and already noted in the 4th century as one of Armenia’s most important and inaccessible strongholds, the fortress was part of a wider defensive system that protected the town of Shaghat and the surrounding region, and it also controlled a secondary trade route linking Nakhichevan with the international Julfa–Paytakaran road.

Over the centuries, Vorotnaberd passed through the hands of the Kingdom of Syunik, the Seljuks, the Armenian‑Georgian Zakarian brothers, and later the Orbelyan princes, before being captured in 1724 by Davit Bek, the leader of the 18th‑century Syunik liberation movement, who used it as a key defensive base for his resistance against Ottoman and Persian forces.

The fortress originally covered about 11.5 hectares, with double‑layered defensive walls of roughly hewn basalt stones, an inner citadel on a higher ridge, remnants of a semicircular watchtower and chapel, small residential structures, and an underground passage that connected the fortress directly to the Vorotan River for water supply and secret escape during sieges.
