Waihi Beach
New Zealand, New Zealand
Waihi Beach is a coastal town at the western end of the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand’s North Island, located at the foot of the Coromandel Peninsula about 40–45 minutes north of Tauranga and two hours from Auckland.
The main beach stretches 9–10 kilometers of pristine white sand with surf rolling in, making it ideal for swimming, surfing, and long walks. The town has a permanent population of 2,620 people with a median age of 58.8 years, giving it a relaxed, older demographic typical of a seaside retirement and holiday destination.
At the northern end, the 145-hectare Orokawa Scenic Reserve offers coastal walking tracks through native bush including pōhutukawa, pūriri, and nīkau palms to the undeveloped Orokawa Bay. Māori have lived in the region since pre-European times with numerous pā sites nearby, and the Waihi Beach Kura primary school has served the community since 1924.
The area features a friendly, welcoming vibe with good coffee, local markets, boutique shopping, scenic walking trails, and nearby Athenree mineral hot springs, making it a popular coastal escape for families and those seeking a laid-back beach lifestyle.
