Waldschlössel
Klingenmünster, Germany, Germany
Waldschlössel, also known as Schlössel or Burg Schlössel, is a remarkably preserved early medieval castle ruin on the Treutelsberg above Klingenmünster in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, originating as a late Carolingian refuge fort around 880–920 against Norman raids before its core Salian tower mound structure was built circa 1030–1040 under King Conrad II as protectors of Klingenmünster Abbey.
Likely constructed by the Counts of Saarbrücken as Vogt of the abbey, it featured advanced comforts like fireplaces in every room and underwent three destruction-rebuild cycles by the mid-12th century—possibly by Frederick Barbarossa in 1168—before abandonment and burial under debris until rediscovery in 1855 during nearby clinic construction.
Excavated since 1988, its UNESCO-protected remnants include original gates, mortar floors, and an Erzofen furnace, now a hiking highlight with trails revealing its role in early German fortification history.
