Wasserburg Klüsserath
Klüsserath, Germany, Germany
Wasserburg Klüsserath is a former moated castle on the northern bank of a Mosel River bend in Klüsserath, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, evolving from a Frankish royal estate first mentioned in 748 when Bishop Chrodegang of Metz granted it to Gorze Abbey.
Documented as a "tower with fortress" in 1338 under Trier Archbishop Baldwin of Luxembourg, it served as a fortified seat for local lords like the Freiherren von Kesselstatt exercising high court jurisdiction, with Emperor Maximilian I stopping there in 1512 en route to the Trier Reichstag.
Rebuilt in the 16th century from rugged slate stone and updated post-18th-century fire with larger windows replacing loopholes plus a three-arched stone bridge in 1783, its moats were filled soon after; sold as national property in 1803, the four-story rectangular tower and outer courtyard with service buildings persist as a cultural monument.
