Wasserschloss Crottorf
Friesenhagen, Germany, Germany
Wasserschloss Crottorf in Friesenhagen, Germany, is a picturesque moated castle first mentioned in 1261 as a knight's estate owned by Ritter Ludwig von Crottorf, evolving by 1326 into a fortified Hof and rebuilt around 1550 by Johann von Selbach into a robust water castle with defensive towers.
The von Hatzfeld family elevated it through Baroque expansions in the 17th century under Hermann von Hatzfeld, adding ornate features praised by artist Domenico Rosso in 1661 as "a piece of paradise fallen from heaven," surrounded by a romantic park and four prominent towers.
Today privately owned by the Hatzfeldt-Wildenburg-Dönhoff family, its exterior grounds open weekends for visitors amid the scenic Wildenburger Land.
