Wasserschloss Dankern
Haren, Germany, Germany
Wasserschloss Dankern is a Baroque water castle in Haren, Lower Saxony, Germany, constructed around 1680 as a three-winged brick and sandstone structure on wooden piles amid a moat, later expanded with a fourth wing in 1689.
Its origins trace to a medieval round tower possibly in a nearby forest, with the name derived from the Lords of Dankern first documented in 1509, and the current design by rentmaster Johann Heinrich Martels drawing from Westphalian water castle styles.
Today serving as the centerpiece of Germany's largest family holiday park on 200 hectares around Lake Dankern, it offers over 200 play, leisure, and sports activities, more than 700 vacation homes, and limited weekly tours while remaining privately occupied by the Landsberg-Velen family.
