Wasserschloss Mellenthin
Mellenthin, Germany, Germany
Wasserschloss Mellenthin in Mellenthin, Germany, is a Renaissance moated castle built between 1575 and 1596 by Rüdiger von Neuenkirchen (also called Nienkerken) on an artificial island surrounded by a 20-meter-wide moat, featuring a two-story main brick building flanked by two lower side wings forming a courtyard.
Held by the von Neuenkirchen family for centuries until the Thirty Years' War, it passed through owners like Swedish general Axel Oxenstierna's heirs and later Prussian nobles, with notable interiors including a richly ornamented 1613 Renaissance fireplace—one of Germany's finest.
After WWII expropriation and diverse uses like a kindergarten and museum, privatization in 2001 led to restoration as a hotel, brewery, café, and distillery by the Fiodora family, preserving its charm amid Usedom's nature park.
