Welschbillig Castle
Germany, Germany
Welschbillig Castle is a medieval fortress ruin in Welschbillig, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, built atop a 2nd-4th century Roman villa rustica featuring a U-shaped layout around a large 58x18-meter basin originally encircled by 112 hermae busts—71 of which survive in Trier's Rheinisches Landesmuseum.
Fortified significantly from 1242-1299 by Trier's Prince-Elector Arnold II of Isenburg and expanded as a Landesburg by successors, it endured until destruction by French troops under Louis XIV in 1673-74 during the Dutch War, with its southern side demolished in 1889-91 for a church.
Today, the quadrangular site with moats retains a gateway flanked by round towers, a stone bridge, and northwest tower remnants, now hosting the parish church and an 1711 Amtshaus amid its historical layers.
