Wendhausen Castle
Lehre, Germany, Germany
Wendhausen Castle in Lehre, Germany, is a Renaissance-style moated château built in 1688 by Chancellor Philipp Ludwig Probst on the foundations of a 14th-century fortress originally owned by the Duke of Braunschweig.
The irregular three-wing complex, set on an oblong moat with a main building, cavalier house, barn, gatehouse, and stables, once featured Versailles-inspired Baroque gardens designed by later owner Konrad Detlev von Dehn, complete with gondola rides.
Fully restored by 1995 under architect Carsten Henze—who added a private art gallery in the southern wing—it now displays sculptures by Denis Stuart Rose in the park and welcomes visitors to its historic grounds.
