Wenigenburg
Gudensberg, Germany
Wenigenburg in Gudensberg, Germany, was a Romanesque hilltop castle probably developed from an economic estate of the nearby Obernburg on a basalt peak.
It likely dates back to the time of the Werner family, early Hessian counts. The castle was first referenced in 1272 when Landgrave Heinrich I paid its guards, and in 1312 it was captured during efforts to reclaim territory for Hesse. In 1387, it was completely destroyed by Mainz troops during a siege and was never rebuilt as a fortress. Parts of its ruins were later integrated into the town’s fortifications.
Over the centuries, some of the existing buildings were constructed or repurposed, serving as the residence of a tower watchman responsible for fire alerts, and from the 18th century, it housed a music school until around 1900. After serving various roles including a tavern, it underwent restoration and today remains privately owned.
