Wernerseck Castle
Germany, Germany
Wernerseck Castle is a late medieval hilltop ruin near Ochtendung in Germany's Rhineland-Palatinate, built around 1401-1402 by Trier Archbishop Werner of Falkenstein as a strategic border fortress against Cologne's territory during expansionist conflicts in the Pellenz region.
Named "Werner's corner" after its founder, the pentagonal complex features a four-story bergfried tower, three round shell towers, thick walls up to 1.6 meters, and remnants of an outer bailey on a narrow spur above the Nette River valley, overlying a 4th-century Roman refuge fort evidenced by coins and pottery.
Abandoned by the 16th century after changing hands through noble feuds, its atmospheric remains are now freely accessible for hiking with panoramic Eifel views.
