Wewelsburg
Büren, Germany, Germany
Wewelsburg in Büren, Germany, is Germany's only triangular Renaissance castle, built between 1603 and 1609 as a secondary residence for the Prince-Bishops of Paderborn atop a medieval fortress from around 1300, overlooking the Alme Valley with three massive wings and round corner towers connected by thick walls.
Leased to the SS in 1934 by Heinrich Himmler, it became a planned ideological cult center with expansions, a nearby concentration camp where over 1,200 died, and symbolic features like a crypt and sun wheel mosaic, until partially blown up on his orders in 1945.
Rebuilt postwar by the Büren district as a museum, youth hostel, and cultural site, it now houses exhibits on regional history and a memorial to Nazi crimes, drawing visitors for its striking architecture and sobering past.
