Wildburg
Germany, Germany
Wildburg Castle, near Treis-Karden along Germany's Moselle River in Rhineland-Palatinate, is a restored medieval fortress likely built in the 13th or 14th century by the Lords of Wildenberg as a strategic outpost overlooking the valley. Destroyed by French forces in 1689 during the War of the Palatine Succession alongside nearby Treis Castle, it lay in ruins until private owner Kurt Honsberg purchased and partially reconstructed it starting in 1956, rebuilding the Romanesque palas hall, raising the square northern keep to full height, and restoring the gate tower and walls for residential use. Today, the preserved complex blends habitable sections with ruin remnants in a scenic garden, offering a vivid glimpse of Moselle heritage while complementing hikes to sister site Burg Treis.
