Wilhelmstein
Wunstorf, Germany, Germany
Wilhelmstein is an artificial island fortress spanning 12,500 square meters in the Steinhuder Meer lake near Wunstorf, Lower Saxony, Germany.
Built between 1761 and 1765 by Count William of Schaumburg-Lippe as an impregnable star-shaped defense for his principality, it successfully repelled Hessian forces in 1787 and later functioned as a military academy, observatory, research site—including early submarine prototypes—and state prison until 1876.
Today accessible by boat from Steinhude or Mardorf, the well-preserved site draws tourists to explore its cannons, cells, tower views, museum, and romantic island atmosphere.
