The Williamsburg Botanical Garden and Freedom Park Arboretum in Williamsburg, Virginia, form a unique green space dedicated to showcasing native plants of the Virginia Coastal Plain, with an emphasis on species that support pollinators and local wildlife.

The garden originated from a 2002 community effort to create a botanical garden in an area previously affected by Hurricane Irene, evolving into a living museum and rescue site for native trees and shrubs threatened by development.

The current inventory includes 369 trees and shrubs of 123 species, meticulously mapped and labeled by local Master Gardener volunteers. Nearby, in the historic Free Black Settlement Tract, volunteers have worked to preserve the land of formerly enslaved people freed in the early 1800s, planting fruit-bearing species that supported early residents.

The gardens host educational events, masterclasses on native orchids, and plant sales, all reflecting Williamsburg’s deep history of gardening, including the role of enslaved gardeners in the colonial era. The botanical garden and arboretum are managed by a nonprofit organization and offer a natural escape where visitors can appreciate both horticultural beauty and significant historical connections.
