Wing Haven in Charlotte, North Carolina, is a historic garden and bird sanctuary established in 1927 by Elizabeth and Edwin Clarkson.

It began as a barren red clay field where the Clarksons designed and built their home and garden, creating a sanctuary that combines horticulture and wildlife conservation. Elizabeth Clarkson, deeply interested in ornithology, documented over 150 bird species on the property and helped form the Mecklenburg Audubon Society, working to protect birds especially during times of pesticide threats.

Wing Haven includes the Elizabeth Lawrence House and Garden, a living laboratory of the renowned garden writer and landscape architect, which continues to be preserved for education and inspiration. The garden expanded with the addition of the SEED Wildlife & Children’s Gardens providing interactive learning environments and habitats for local wildlife.

Recognized as a local historic landmark and certified as a wildlife habitat, Wing Haven is a vibrant, living landscape offering visitors peaceful natural beauty, educational programs, and opportunities to experience a legacy of sustainable gardening and bird conservation.
