Zagatala Castle Walls
Zaqatala, Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan
Zagatala Castle Walls are the surviving fortified walls of a large 19th‑century Russian military fortress built in the 1830s under General Ivan Paskevich in the present-day town of Zaqatala (Zagatala) in northwest Azerbaijan, intended to secure Russian control over the region and defend against local forces during the Caucasian War.
The original fortress complex stretched about 3 kilometers around its perimeter, with walls up to 5 meters high and 1.5–2 meters thick, and included towers for artillery, a water reservoir, stables, a gunpowder warehouse, cannons, and a Russian church that later became a cultural club.
Over the years, the site was used for various purposes, including as a prison, hospital, and furniture workshop, and it is particularly notable for having imprisoned sailors arrested from the revolutionary battleship Potemkin in 1907, an episode that fed into the broader unrest leading to the Russian Revolution.
Today, only parts of the walls and ruins of internal buildings remain, but the site is a recognised historical landmark and tourist attraction in Zaqatala, easily reached on foot from Dede Gorgud Square in the city centre, and visitors can walk along the old stone walls, see the remaining structures and cannons, and enjoy views of the surrounding Caucasus landscape.
