Zerbst Castle
Zerbst, Germany, Germany
Zerbst Castle in Zerbst, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, was a grand Baroque residence for the Princes of Anhalt-Zerbst, constructed from 1681 on the site of a medieval moated fortress, with construction spanning four generations until 1753.
Italian architect Giovanni Simonetti led early phases, creating opulent interiors with ornate ceilings and fireplaces, while later additions included a chapel (1719), central tower (1725), and east wing (1744), blending Dutch influences in its three-wing layout around a cour d'honneur.
Severely bombed in 1945 and deliberately demolished under GDR policy despite reconstruction potential, only the east wing ruins survive today as a poignant landmark.
