Zörbig Castle
Zörbig, Germany, Germany
Zörbig Castle, or Schloss Zörbig, in Zörbig, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, originated from a Slavic ringwall fort around the 10th century, converted into a stone German fortress first mentioned in 961 as Civitas Zurbici by Emperor Otto I, who gifted its tithe to Magdeburg's Mauritius monastery.
Controlled by the Wettin dynasty as a border stronghold guarding trade routes from Magdeburg to Leipzig, it passed to the Archbishopric of Magdeburg in 1242 and served as an administrative seat, heavily damaged in the Thirty Years' War before Baroque reconstruction from 1656-1703 into an incomplete three-wing palace around a prominent 12th-century bergfried tower.
Today housing the Kulturquadrat with a local history museum, city library, and archive, the site reflects over a millennium of strategic and civic importance amid the town's preserved Renaissance walls.
