Verified Zum Forstbotanischen Garten

Germany, Germany

"Zum Forstbotanischen Garten" is the name of a street in Cologne-Rodenkirchen (Marienburg district) that leads to the Forstbotanischer Garten Köln (Cologne Forest Botanical Garden), a 25-hectare arboretum and woodland botanical garden located at Schillingsrotterstraße 100 in southern Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, which is part of the city's outer green belt.

The garden was created between 1962–1964 on former agricultural land that had been part of Cologne's outer fortress ring until the end of World War I, with construction beginning in autumn 1962 to create an area offering both botany professionals and amateur garden enthusiasts great species diversity for inspiration and study.

The garden features over 3,000 species of woody plants from around the world planted on the former cropland in the early 1960s, including a 1.5-hectare woodland area with North American trees such as giant sequoia, yellow pine, river cedar, and Colorado hemlock, a rhododendron ravine, a heath garden, a Christmas rose meadow with many varieties, and a Japanese section with cherry blossoms, colorful azalea blooms, and magnificent autumn coloring of fan maples and pagoda trees plus bamboo.
