Zweibrücken Castle
Zweibrücken, Germany, Germany
Zweibrücken Castle stands as the grandest secular Baroque palace in the Palatinate, located in Zweibrücken, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.
Originally a 12th-century fortress guarding trade routes, it was rebuilt in 1720–1725 by Swedish architect Jonas Erikson Sundahl on marshy ground reinforced with oak piles, commissioned by Duke Gustav for opulent living rather than defense.
Damaged in the 1670s Franco-Dutch War, sacked by French troops in 1793, and briefly converted to Maximilianskirche church in 1820 before becoming a judicial seat, it was gutted by Allied bombs in 1945 yet meticulously reconstructed in 1962–1964 from original plans using local red and yellow sandstones.
Today, it houses the Palatine Higher Regional Court and local law courts, its restored Late Baroque facade dominating Schlossplatz.
