Zwischenwerk VIIIb
Cologne, Germany, Germany
Zwischenwerk VIIIb is the best-preserved fortification from Cologne's outer Prussian fortress ring, built between 1876 and 1878 in the Marienburg district south of the city center along the Rhine in Germany.
Shaped like a trapezoid with brick walls, counterscarp defenses, and a moat now featuring 1970s iron sculptures as a park, it was armed with a 15 cm ring cannon reaching 6,000 meters and three 9 cm guns, housing about 150-180 soldiers.
Largely spared from post-Versailles Treaty demolition unlike most peers, it has been restored by the Cologne Research Institute of Fortification Architecture into the Kölner Festungsmuseum, offering cleaned interiors, exhibitions, guided tours, and a functional drawbridge amid ongoing volunteer efforts.
