Hungary
Hungary is a landlocked nation in Central Europe located in the Carpathian Basin. It shares borders with Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, and Austria. Budapest is the capital and largest city. The country is primarily inhabited by ethnic Hungarians (Magyars), with the Hungarian language being one of the few in Europe not in the Indo-European language family.
Hungary has a rich history, with statehood dating back to the 9th century and a Christian kingdom established by King Stephen I in 1000. Historically a major power in medieval Europe, Hungary experienced periods of Ottoman and Habsburg rule before regaining independence after World War I.
Today, Hungary is a unitary multiparty republic, with an economy that has transitioned from socialism to a free-market system and is a member of the European Union. Lake Balaton is the largest lake in Central Europe, and Hungary is famous for its spa towns and natural hot springs.
