Hungarian Parliament Building
Budapest (Pest side), Hungary
The Hungarian Parliament Building is a grand Neo‑Gothic legislature on the Pest side of Budapest, sitting on Kossuth Square along the eastern bank of the Danube River. It serves as the seat of the National Assembly of Hungary and is one of the country’s most recognizable political and architectural symbols. The building was designed by Hungarian architect Imre Steindl, constructed between 1885 and 1904, and combines elements of Gothic Revival, Neo‑Baroque, and Neo‑Renaissance styles with a central dome influenced by Vienna’s Maria vom Siege church. It is the largest building in Hungary and among the tallest in the capital, with a length of about 268 meters, a width of 123 meters, and richly decorated interiors made with tens of millions of bricks, hundreds of thousands of precious stones, and significant amounts of gold. The complex houses the Holy Crown, the main parliamentary chamber, and ceremonial halls, and has been open to guided public tours since 1990, making it both a functioning government center and a major tourist attraction in Budapest.
