Fisherman's Bastion
Budapest (Buda side), Hungary
Fisherman’s Bastion is a striking neo‑Romanesque lookout terrace on the Buda side of Budapest, built between 1895 and 1902 as part of the city’s 1000‑year‑anniversary celebrations of the Hungarian state. It sits just above Matthias Church in the Buda Castle District and offers one of the most famous panoramic views of the Danube, the Hungarian Parliament Building, and Pest’s skyline. The complex of seven fairytale‑like towers and arched walkways was designed by architect Frigyes Schulek to resemble a medieval castle, even though it is essentially a decorative fortification rather than an original defensive structure. Its name recalls the medieval fishermen’s guild that once guarded the old section of the Buda castle walls on this stretch of the river. Today Fisherman’s Bastion is one of Budapest’s most photographed landmarks, freely accessible at ground level while the upper towers and terraces require a small ticket, making it a must‑visit for both locals and tourists.
