Széchenyi Chain Bridge
Budapest, Hungary
The Széchenyi Chain Bridge is a famous suspension bridge that spans the Danube in Budapest, connecting the Pest side of the city with the Buda hills and the Buda Castle District. It was the first permanent bridge across the Danube in Hungary, designed by English engineer William Tierney Clark and built by Scottish engineer Adam Clark, opening in 1849 after a decade of construction. The bridge is about 375 meters long, with a central span of around 202 meters, and its twin stone towers and massive iron chains made it an engineering marvel and one of the longest suspension bridges in Europe at the time. It is named after Count István Széchenyi, who championed the project to unite Buda and Pest, which later became the single city of Budapest in 1873. The Széchenyi Chain Bridge is now one of the capital’s most iconic symbols, especially when lit at night, offering pedestrians free access and excellent views of the Hungarian Parliament Building and Buda Castle.
