Ada Kaleh was a small artificial island on the Danube River, about 3 km downstream from Orșova in Romania, once home to a unique Turkish Muslim community of around 600 people living in picturesque Ottoman-style houses, mosques, and bazaars that created an exotic enclave in Europe. Originally fortified by Habsburgs in the 17th century as a Vauban-style fortress called New Orșova to counter Ottoman threats—changing hands multiple times via treaties like Karlowitz (1699) and Passarowitz (1718)—it became a de facto Ottoman possession overlooked at the 1878 Congress of Berlin, enjoying tax-free trade status that thrived on tobacco smuggling and tourism until after World War I. Annexed unilaterally by Hungary in 1913 and formally ceded to Romania via the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne following a local referendum, it retained privileges briefly reinstated by King Carol II in 1931 before communist authorities submerged it entirely in 1970 under 18 meters of water to build the Iron Gates hydroelectric dam, displacing residents to Turkey or Constanța while relocating artifacts like a sultan's carpet to a mosque there.
