Aghmacart Castle is a ruined medieval tower house located near Kilmacshane in County Laois, close to the site of the historic Aghmacart Priory. The castle was part of a larger religious and settlement complex and is believed to have been associated with the nearby priory and the Fitzpatrick family, an important local Gaelic dynasty. Today, only fragments of the castle survive, mainly parts of the north wall and northeast corner. Originally a two-storey stone structure surrounded by a fortified enclosure, it remained largely intact until the early 19th century before suffering major collapse and decay. Although now a ruin, Aghmacart Castle offers a glimpse into County Laois’s medieval past. Together with the nearby priory site and surrounding earthworks, it reflects the area’s historical importance as a religious, residential, and agricultural center.
