The Al-Shaheed Monument, also known as the Martyrs’ Memorial, is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Baghdad, Iraq. Designed by Iraqi sculptor Ismail Fatah al-Turk in collaboration with architect Saman Kamal, it was completed in 1983 to honor Iraqi soldiers who died during the Iran-Iraq War. Over time, it has come to symbolize the sacrifice of all Iraqi martyrs. The monument is famous for its striking design: a large turquoise dome split into two halves, rising above an artificial lake. Between the two halves are an eternal flame and an Iraqi flag, while an underground museum and memorial space lie beneath the structure. The design combines modern architecture with elements inspired by traditional Islamic and Abbasid-era domes. Today, the monument is both a national memorial and a cultural landmark. Its distinctive silhouette has become a symbol of Baghdad, representing remembrance, resilience, and the enduring spirit of the Iraqi people.
