Alange Castle
Spain, Spain
Alange Castle, also called Castillo de la Culebra, is a 9th-century Moorish fortress perched on Cerro de la Culebra hill near the Alange reservoir in Badajoz province, Extremadura, Spain, originally built over a Roman site for defense along the Matachel River.
Christians captured it in the 13th century, using it amid battles until abandonment by the 16th century, leaving mainly the keep, remnants of two towers, gates, walls, and cisterns - all but the latter from the Christian era. Today, the free-access site offers panoramic views ideal for birdwatching and hiking via paths like Puerta del Sol or Umbría routes.
