Alcazaba de Estepa
Estepa, Spain, Spain
Alcazaba de Estepa is an ancient Islamic fortress in Estepa, Seville province, Spain, built atop the hill of the pre-Roman town of Ostippo around the 10th century with walls reformed during the Almohad invasion in the 12th century to defend the weaker access side of the medieval city.
It includes a large enclosure surrounding the former madina, a prominent Torre del Homenaje keep tower from around 1390 constructed with ashlar masonry, strategic gates like the Puerta de la Villa enhanced for defense against Granada, and remnants such as courtyards, cisterns, and walls that later served as a palace for the marquises of Estepa.
As a key outpost during the Reconquista under the Order of Santiago from the 13th to 16th centuries, it faced attacks like the 1462 raid by Muley Abulhacen, and today preserves its military heritage amid panoramic views despite partial abandonment.
