Alcazaba de Tudela
Tudela, Spain
Alcazaba de Tudela is a 9th-century Muslim fortress on the Cerro de Santa Bárbara hill in Tudela, Spain, built around 803-804 by Amrùs ben Yusuf to control the strategic Ebro River crossing between Christian and Muslim territories, featuring double walls, deep moats, numerous watchtowers, and a central high tower amid nearly vertical natural cliffs.
It served as a key stronghold for the Banu Qasi family, later the Taifa of Zaragoza and independent Taifa of Tudela, until its Christian conquest in 1119 by Alfonso I el Batallador, after which it evolved into a medieval castle under Navarrese kings like Sancho VII el Fuerte and Carlos III el Noble, who transformed it into a luxurious Renaissance palace with grand halls, galleries, and justice porches.
Demolished in 1516 on orders from Cardinal Cisneros, with towers razed and moats filled, its ruins persisted until the 19th century, reused for local construction and briefly fortified during conflicts, before the site became a landfill topped by a 1942 Sacred Heart monument.
Today, archaeological remnants including walls, cisterns, wells, and Arab pottery confirm its Islamic origins, offering panoramic city views in a landscaped park that highlights Tudela's multicultural heritage.
