Alcázar de Salamanca (restos)
Salamanca, Spain, Spain
Alcázar de Salamanca consists of the ruins of an 11th-century medieval fortress southwest of Salamanca city center, Spain, originally built by Alfonso VI of León as part of the Christian repopulation efforts following the Muslim conquest.
Reconstructed in the 13th century on earlier foundations using irregular masonry typical of Spanish military architecture, it served defensive purposes amid Reconquista border conflicts before being deliberately demolished in 1472 by city order to prevent use as a criminal refuge.
Today, these evocative remnants—viewable externally or via University of Salamanca coordination—reveal layered defensive evolution from pre-Roman to medieval eras near the Tormes River.
