Alcázar de Toro
Toro, Spain, Spain
Alcázar de Toro is a historic fortress in the city of Toro, Zamora province, Castilla y León, Spain, with origins tracing to the 10th century as part of the initial walled defenses, though its current structure dates primarily to the 15th century.
Initiated between 1188-1195 under Alfonso IX of León after his marriage to Berenguela, it was rebuilt by María de Molina in the late 13th century and served as a key stronghold during the León-Castile division, later sheltering Juana la Beltraneja in the 15th century amid succession disputes.
Reduced to ruins by the mid-19th century after use as a gunpowder store, the restored site now houses Toro's tourist office, exhibition spaces, and 180-meter walkways offering sweeping views of the Duero River and surrounding plains.
