Repurposed over centuries as a cloth factory, military barracks, and aerostation service quarters, it suffered near-total destruction during the Napoleonic invasion and Spanish Civil War. Archaeological digs since 1998 have unearthed layers from its Islamic, Gothic, and Renaissance phases, though the site remains atmospheric ruins blending military and palatial architecture.
