Ängsö Slott
Ängsösund, Sweden, Sweden
Ängsö Slott, located on Ängsö island in Lake Mälaren near Ängsösund and Västerås, Sweden, dates back to a mention in 1185 and features a medieval stone core expanded into a four-story cubical castle by the Sparre family in the 1480s as a fortress.
It gained its current 1740s appearance through redesigns by Carl Hårleman, passed to the Piper family in 1710, and served as a lived-in residence until the 1950s before becoming a museum in 1959 with preserved interiors, a historic church featuring 1300s frescoes, and legends of ghosts like the Engsö Chain.
Owned by the Westmanna foundation since 1971, the site opens summers for tours amid scenic landscapes, blending noble history with eerie tales.
