Apothecary Garden
Meshchansky District, Moscow, Russia, Russia
The Apothecary Garden (Aptekarsky Ogorod) is a historic botanical garden in Moscow's Meshchansky District, founded in 1706 by Peter the Great to grow medicinal herbs for the Moscow General Hospital.
The name "Aptekarsky" translates to "Pharmacy" or "Apothecary" because it was originally dedicated solely to medicinal plants. Today, it belongs to Moscow State University's Botanical Garden and serves as a serene oasis in the city center, featuring over 2,000 plant species, three greenhouses with tropical plants, a carp pond with koi and terrapins, and some of Moscow's oldest trees, including a larch legend says Peter I planted himself.
After falling into disrepair during the Soviet era, the garden underwent major reconstruction in the 1990s and now includes cafes, restaurants, and weekend cultural events like concerts and craft fairs.
