Naryn-Kala
Derbent, Republic of Dagestan, Russia, Russia
Naryn-Kala is the ancient citadel atop a hill in Derbent, Republic of Dagestan, Russia, forming the core of the 6th-century Sasanian fortifications built by Persian ruler Khosrow I to block nomadic invasions through the Caspian Gates pass between the Caucasus Mountains and Caspian Sea. Covering 4.5 hectares with 6.5-meter-high, 3.5-meter-thick stone walls extending into the sea, it connects to parallel Derbent walls 350-450 meters apart housing the medieval city and a 40-km mountain wall (Dagh-Bary), featuring towers, gates like Orta Cana, khan's palace, baths, prison, water systems, and possible early Christian structures amid Bronze Age origins. Part of UNESCO World Heritage since 2003 alongside Derbent's old city, it reveals layered history from Sasanian, Arab, Mongol, and Russian eras through ongoing excavations yielding artifacts up to 12 meters deep.
