Arco de la Cárcel
León, Spain, Spain
The Arco de la Cárcel, also called Puerta Castillo, is the sole surviving gate from León's original Roman walls, built in the 1st century as part of Legio VII Gemina's camp and later modified through medieval and 18th-century reconstructions.
Located north of the old town connecting Plaza del Espolón and Plaza Puerta Castillo, it earned its name from the adjacent castle used as a prison, where notables like the Duke of Híjar were held in 1649 for conspiring against Philip IV until his death after 15 years.
Crowned by a statue of Don Pelayo and blending Roman stonework with later arches, it stands as a protected emblem of León's layered history now linking to the city's historic archives.
