Arco de Santa María
Burgos, Spain, Spain
Arco de Santa María is an iconic 16th-century Renaissance gate in Burgos, Spain, originally one of the city's 12 medieval entrances rebuilt atop a 13th-century tower that guarded the main bridge over the Arlanzón River.
Commissioned in 1536 by Emperor Charles V to honor Burgos leaders who backed him against the Comuneros Revolt, its grand façade by architects Francisco de Colonia and Juan de Vallejo features intricate sculptures of local heroes like El Cid, Fernán González, city founder Diego Rodríguez Porcelos, and the judges Nuño Rasura and Laín Calvo.
Over centuries, it served as a prison, town hall, and museum, now standing as a cultural landmark linking Burgos's historic core to its Gothic cathedral across the river.
