Ardtarmon Castle is a historic castle overlooking Sligo Bay near Ballinfull in County Sligo. Its origins date back to at least the 16th and early 17th centuries, and it is associated with both the Gaelic O'Hart clan and the later Gore family, who became prominent landowners in the region. Built as a fortified manor house in a strategic coastal position, the castle was designed to protect the approaches to Sligo while also serving as a family residence. It later became connected to the Gore-Booth family of nearby Lissadell House, whose descendants included Constance Markievicz, a leading figure in Ireland’s struggle for independence. After suffering a devastating fire and falling into ruin for many years, Ardtarmon Castle was carefully restored in the late 20th century. Today it stands as a distinctive landmark combining centuries of history, dramatic sea views, and a strong connection to County Sligo’s cultural and political heritage.
