Askeaton Castle is one of Ireland’s oldest and most impressive Norman castles, located in the town of Askeaton, County Limerick, on a rocky island in the River Deel. Founded around 1199, it became a major stronghold of the powerful Fitzgerald Earls of Desmond and served as an important centre of power in Munster for centuries. The castle played a significant role in the conflicts of the late 16th century, particularly during the Desmond Rebellions. Although parts of the fortress were damaged during sieges and later military actions, substantial ruins survive today, including a remarkable banqueting hall, sections of the tower, and defensive structures. Today, Askeaton Castle is one of County Limerick’s most important medieval monuments. Its riverside setting, long history, and impressive architecture make it a striking reminder of Ireland’s Norman heritage and medieval past.
